Forklift safety practices

Training:

Proper operation techniques, different types of forklifts, maintenance and inspection procedures, new technologies in forklift operation, industry regulations, training best practices, common forklift accidents and how to avoid them, ergonomic considerations for operators, and case studies of successful forklift safety programs.

Pre-shift inspection:

Before each shift, operators should thoroughly inspect the forklift for any mechanical issues, including tires, lights, brakes, and forks.

Load stability:

Secure loads properly by ensuring they are balanced and centered on the forks, using straps or bindings when necessary, and keeping forks as low as possible while traveling.

Safe travel speed:

Maintain a reasonable speed depending on the conditions and always slow down when turning, approaching intersections, or on ramps.

Visibility and awareness:

Be mindful of your surroundings, use rear-view mirrors, and make eye contact with pedestrians to ensure they are aware of your movements.

Pedestrian safety:

Designate pedestrian walkways, use warning signals, and ensure pedestrians always maintain a safe distance from operating forklifts.

Proper lifting techniques:

When lifting a load, position the forks under the load's center of gravity and lift smoothly to minimize instability.

Appropriate attire:

Wear safety gear including high-visibility clothing, steel-toed boots, and a seatbelt while operating a forklift.

Emergency procedures:

Understand and practice emergency procedures including how to safely stop the forklift in case of an emergency.

Important points to remember:

# Never leave a forklift unattended with the forks raised.

# Do not allow passengers on the forklift unless designated as a passenger seat.

# Do not operate a forklift if you are fatigued or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

# Report any forklift malfunctions or safety concerns immediately.
